According to that article, they didn't have the correct documentation for her and they reportedly had her begging, right? I realize that they wouldn't have figured it out if she wasn't a little white girl, but it doesn't seem like she was in healthy conditions. I'm not sure I'm understanding your post, are you saying they didn't take that kid? Or are you just pointing out that they only noticed because she was white?
OK but srsly since your cluelessness isn’t hostile, I suppose I’ll take the time to answer (i.e., repost the content I’ve already blogged, JFC)
Just a smattering of facts about the history of adoption no one knows/is willing to face is sufficient to educate most sentient beings, so here’s a handy dandy timeline: everything from the official expulsion of ALL Roma from the domain of the Church in 1568 to the systematic kidnapping and dilution of bloodlines of Romani children forced to work as farm laborers, mass incarcerated in state ‘orphanages’ in the hundreds of thousands.
Fun fact: the ethnocidal agenda against the Roma actually set modern adoption industry standards by falsifying records of proceedings so birth parents can never find where their children are placed! Under the auspices of the Catholic church, children were mass abducted from their living, breathing families — Romani parents who opposed this were declared “insane” and locked up in mental institutions. This continued til the fucking 1970s, and TO THIS DAY the spearheading organization still refuses Romani adoptees access to any of their records that would help them find birth families.
It doesn’t seem you know anything about transracial/ethnic adoption and antiziganism, so do some reading (as referenced & even hyperlinked before, Tobias Hübinette’s an excellent place to start).
Clearly you’re not aware of the centuries of racist propaganda of Christian children “kidnapped and sacrificed for ritual murdering” by Roma or Jews. You’re not aware these completely bullshit rumors provided a convenient excuse for white supremacist massacres, pogroms, and persecution.
And I say ‘completely bullshit’ bc guess what: we’ve seen all this before. 2008 an Italian Roma community was accused of kidnapping a white baby, which ignited rampant police brutality against not just the community but Roma people all over the country. Surprise surprise? The accusation turned out to be false.
Do Roma children biological or adopted grow up in the best of conditions? Of course not, white supremacists have seen fit to reduce them to begging and exile while systematically stealing generations upon generations and wiping out their culture.
But if your overriding concern’s still blondie being ‘better off’ outside her Roma community, then score one more sucker for the White Savior Industrial Complex.
p.s. They are illegally registering Romani children to this day even in countries as “progressive” (LOL) as Sweden. Also this day: when Romani mothers are arrested for begging, European police frequently take the healthiest among their children and place them for adoption with white Christian families.
History matters. You’re welcome.
So many things to say.
a) Don’t trust police reports or government reports or whatever they say about Roma communities, not without heavy scrutiny. The bigotry against Roma in Europe is so heavily ingrained that you just can’t trust what they say. I have met Europeans who will protest injustices against the Jewish communities, Arab communities, African communities, immigrant communities…but then they will turn around and say the most racist shit about Roma people.
b) Maybe the documentation/registration was incorrect…because many Roma in Europe have trouble getting education and may, in fact, be illiterate or functionally illiterate, or illiterate when it comes to complicated legal papers, because again, Europe is disturbingly anti-ziganist.
c) Let’s say the police ARE correct here, that conditions in the camp were awful (very possible, given that, again, Europe is full of anti-ziganism and getting basic needs met outside of your own Roma community can be near impossible), and that the girl WAS being used for begging, being used as child labour, and was even kidnapped/trafficked. This is an awful possibility! Children (people!) should not be subjected to that, that is absolutely wrong. BUT.
If this is all true, then this child is not the only one - but she’s the only one the police cared about and rescued. If this is all true, the police saw a blond girl, rescued her, but ignored the plight of all the other (non-blond, likely non-white or “less” white) children because brown children suffering is okay and expected, but a white blond girl? CALL TO ARMS, EVERYONE!
Europe’s anti-ziganism is long-seated, deep, and distressing. Like I said above, many Europeans will have all the right liberal, anti-racist views, support and maybe even be a part of multiculturalism and anti-racist movements, but you mention the Roma and they will go off. They literally do not consider the Roma to be human. And this has fed into centuries of oppression and marginalization that in turn feeds into Roma communities of extreme poverty and lack of resources and opportunities, even basic ones like steady shelter or education or food security. And like brandx has said, this has also fed into a cultural genocide (among actual physical MURDER genocides) of stealing Roma children, falsifying adoptions, using kidnapped Roma children as slave labour…while claiming Roma (and Jewish, and other) populations were doing the exact same thing to white children, and inciting riots and mass murders of Roma communities for this.
Basically: don’t trust European governments and police when it comes to the Roma populations.
Oral history of Chris Leith, as told to Sandy White Hawk, who is reflecting on Dusten Brown’s Oct. 10 press conference about his decision to stop fighting the legal battle that took his daughter away from him and his tribe and placed her with a white family in spite of the Indian Child Welfare Act (via disabilityhistory)

IRELAND | June 1, 2013: A High Court decision to allow a woman who claims her baby was put up for adoption in the 1970s without her permission to sue for damages could open the door to challenges from thousands of women who had their children taken from them in forced and illegal…
In 2011 I lived in a mother-in-law suite in Sevilla, and every few weeks my landlords would take me with them to a private flamenco bar. One day the dancer wasn’t there, and when my landlord asked where she was, we were told that she was comforting her grandmother, who was a member of several left-wing anti-Francoist groups in her youth and who had given birth to a stillborn child in the 1950s. It turned out that the child had in fact not died, but been taken from her and adopted out under the collusion of the fascist government and the Catholic Church. After the scandal broke, infant graves all over Spain were exhumed, and the poor woman had just found out that she had been visiting a grave stuffed with nothing but rags and garbage for the past fifty years. In all likelihood, her son is still alive somewhere, but the odds are that she will never know what happened to him.
The Catholic Church’s involvement in forced illegal adoptions is shameful and disgusting everywhere it took place, but I think the case of Spain is particularly egregious because of the political element it took under Franco. In these instances, it was not only women who were unmarried or underage who were punished, but also those who were involved in or were married or related to those involved in the anti-fascist movement in Spain.
And it still continued till the 80’s, ten years after Franco’s death, the decade I was born … This issue still gives me chills and it shows the enormous corrupted power and influence that the Catholic Church still holds in my home country … What a shame … Who said that the Transition in Spain was very democratic? MY ASS!
Great commentary, except — calling out the Catholic Church’s “particularly egregious” politically influenced crimes of adoption without so much as mentioning the Roma plays too much into the Church’s ridiculously successful erasure of their ethnocidal agenda against Romani families that spans half a fucking millennia. There’s just still way too much Catholic anti-ziganism to fail in making aware whenever possible of the Church’s politically targeting people not just for opposing views but for bare existence. Take what happened to anti-Francoist mothers and multiply it by a hundred. You’re not even close.
To cite a few infamous examples:
Multiple rulers in the 18th century alone decreed that Romani children be taken by Catholic families, who were often farmers and used the children as extra labor. Upon adulthood, these adoptees were then forced into marriages that would dilute Romani bloodlines.
Pro Juventute systematically kidnapped Romani children throughout the 20th century and placed them in Catholic foster homes. Parents who opposed abduction of their own children were branded “mentally ill,” forcibly put under state guardianship and locked in mental institutions. Similar programs were launched throughout Eastern Europe.
To this day, when Romani mothers are arrested for begging, Italian authorities often take the youngest among their children and place them for adoption with (white) Catholics. Pro Juventute exists to this day too. Romani birth children and parents still can’t find each other because the organization falsified adoption proceedings (and in so doing set modern adoption industry standards). It still refuses Romani adoptees access to their records that would help them find birth families.
I need the ICWA because my father was stolen from his family and adopted to white saviors. Because my grandparents were victims of racist stereotyping as unfit parents by the state. Because my grandmother was a victim and a runaway of Canada’s residential schools system. Because the system never gave them a fucking chance to be a family.
given that under the auspices of the ICWA (Indian Child Welfare Act) there are still FAR more First Nations and Native American children taken from their families and warehoused into foster care today than there were at the height of North America’s government-mandated ‘Kill the Indian in the Child’ ethnocidal school systems
(cannot be repeated enough even tho it feels like screaming into a void)
a class bastard’s just left to ponder whether we’d rather deal with the devil or the devil in disguise.
